Munchen City Centre in Germany
The city centre of Munich is called Old City or Altstadt and is mainly found around following city squares ; Karlplatz, Marienplatz, Isartorplatz and Odeonplatz, and Maximilianstrasse. Most of Munich main tourist sights and attractions are easy to find and located in the city centre.

The Hofgarten to the north of the Residenz is a charming, Italianate park in the middle of Munich town. Admire the Old Masters in the Alte Pinakothek. You will find masterpieces of Rembrandt, Rubens, Raphael, Da Vinci, Dürer and other more. The Neue Pinakothek across the street houses an excellent collection of French Impressionists.
Main squares located in Munich City Centre, Germany
Marienplatz Square — central square right in the heart of old city centre, with the old and new town halls, and the Glockenspiel chimes (daily at 11 a.m. and at noon). Nearby St Peter’s Church, the city’s oldest church (1180), offers great panoramas over the city and sometimes as far as the Alps from its viewing platform. The square is surrounded by numerous hotels, cheaper hostels and pensions and charming b&b’s.
Karlsplatz or Stachus — large city square in the heart of Munich Germany. The plaza is dominated by the Karlstor, a gothic gate of the demolished medieval fortification, and the rondell buildings on both sides next to the gate. The Karlstor at Stachus is one of four main gates of the medieval city wall, served as a fortification to protect Munich. Several hotels are located directly on Karlsplatz Square such as Hotel Königshof, and Anna design hotel.
Isartorplatz or Isar Gate Square — site of the Isartor, one of four main gates of the medieval city wall. The Isartor accommodates the Valentin-Karlstadt museum.
Odeonplatz — central city square, at the southern initial point of the Ludwigstraße, surrounded by the Italianesque Feldherrnhalle, Theatinerkirche and Hofgarten, a former court garden. The square is named after the Odeon, a large Concert Hall which was built between 1826 and 1828 by Leo von Klenze.
Königsplatz — situated in the Kunstareal, Munich’s gallery and museum quarter.
Max-Joseph-Platz — city square named after King Maximilian Joseph. It’s the western starting point of Maximilianstrasse shopping street. Found on the square is The National Theatre Munich or Nationaltheater München, home of the Bavarian State Opera, and the Bavarian State Ballet (Bayerisches Staatsballett). Other main buildings located here are the Königsbau of the Munich Residence, the Residenz Theatre, and the arcades of the former Palais Toerring-Jettenbach.
Münchner Freiheit — site of one of Munich’s largest Christmas Markets. Münchner Freiheit is originally known as Feilitzsch Platz and located in Munich’s Schwabing, near the English Garden.
