Edinburgh - Edinburgh Zoo - Scotland :

Edinburgh Zoo -- This is Scotland’s most popular wildlife attraction with more than 1,000 animals, including meerkats, pygmy hippos, tigers, lions and blue poison arrow frogs. The zoo is set in beautiful parkland and has the world’s biggest penguin pool. Our mission is to inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals, and so to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats.

In just one day, you can meet over 1,000 wonderful animals, in our beautiful parkland setting on the outskirts of Edinburgh. We have some wonderful attractions for you to experience, plus you can also enjoy a wide range of visitor facilities, from free Hilltop Safari rides to the top of the hill, children's play areas, restaurants, gift shops and masses of events and activities throughout the year.

Rainbow Landings provides visitors with a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with beautiful rainbow lorikeet birds, and Budongo Trail allows visitors to visit chimpanzees in the world's most innovative, interactive chimpanzee enclosure.

Edinburgh Zoo is also home to the UK's only koalas in a wonderful Australian themed exhibit; has the largest penguin pool in the world and a primate education and research centre.

Hilltop Safari : Each trip starts at the sea lions, and then continues up through the Zoo to the very top of the hill, where passengers can choose whether to walk back down the hill, or continue on a round trip.  The driver / guide gives a running commentary all the way, pointing out animals of interest, and giving information on our visitor facilities as well. Each trip takes about 30 minutes in total. 

It runs every day of the year, apart from Christmas Day. We have two safari vehicles, and they both operate on very busy days in the spring and summer, and at weekends throughout the year. The tiger trailer can take 18 passengers, and the zebra trailer has room for 20 passengers and three visitors in wheelchairs.

Currency -- The currency is the pound (GBP), which is divided into 100 pence. ATMs are available in all towns and Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted.

Language -- Other than the local language of Scottish, many locals speak English too.

Electricity -- The electrical current in Scotland is 220 volts, 50 cycles alternating current (AC); wall outlets take plugs with two round oversize prongs and plugs with three prongs. If your appliances are dual-voltage, you'll need only an adapter. Don't use 110-volt outlets marked "For shavers only" for high-wattage appliances such as blow-dryers. Most laptops operate equally well on 110 and 220 volts and so require only an adapter.

Air Connections -- Edinburgh is served by Edinburgh Airport (EDI), located about 8 miles (13 km) to the west of the city, with scheduled connections to many cities in Europe and an expanding international long-haul route network, including daily flights to New York (JFK and Newark) and summer services to Toronto.
