Vienna West Train Station -- The Westbahnhof (Western Railway Station) is located in Vienna's 15th District Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus on the Gürtel inner-city traffic artery. The Mariahilfer Street provides a direct route into Vienna city centre.
the starting point of the Austrian Western Railway (Westbahn). Long-distance routes, local trains (S-Bahn) and two underground (U-Bahn) lines reach the Westbahnhof (U3 and U6).
The international railroad traffic to Western and Northern Europe, like Germany, Swiss or France, is carried out mostly via the Vienna West Station. The railway station is the starting point for rail journeys to St. Pölten, Linz, Wels, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Vorarlberg, Germany, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy, and Belgium.
From the Vienna West Station you can use a taxi or public transport to continue to your destination in Vienna. You have access to the underground lines U3 and U6. All trains of the Westbahn stop at Wien Hütteldorf, where you have access to the underground line U4.
The Westbahnhof Train Station Vienna was opened in 1858 and extended from 1910 to 1912. The Vienna Western train station was totally destroyed during the second world war, and completely removed in 1949. The new West Rail Station was opened in 1952.
Bus traffic from the Westbahnhof to Südbahnhof and further to the Vienna Schwechat airport goes every 30 minutes from the front of the West Train Station.
Vienna is conveniently located on the rail lines between Venice Italy, Budapest Hungary, and Prague Czech Republic, the crossroads between Eastern and Western Europe.
Vienna has several railway stations which are situated all around Vienna. The West Station (Westbahnhof) is one of the major stations where you can catch trains to Germany and Switzerland. The South Station (Sudbahnhof) is the station for trains to Italy, Slowenia, Hungary, Croatia, Poland and Slowakia. The most centrally located train station is probably Vienna Central (Wien Mitte, Landstasse) which is a hub of the suburban trains (S-Bahn) and other local trains. All stations are connected with S-bahns, U-bahns and trams.
Time zone -- GMT + 1 (GMT + 2 from last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October)
Currency -- Euro (€) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of €500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of €2, 1 and 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.
Language --German is the official language of Austria, but because the high schools teach English, it's commonly spoken throughout the country, especially in tourist regions. Certain Austrian minorities speak Slavic languages, and Hungarian is common in Burgenland.
Electricity -- Vienna operates on 220 volts AC, with the European 50-cycle circuit. That means that U.S.-made appliances will need a transformer (sometimes called a converter). Many Viennese hotels stock adapter plugs but not power transformers. Electric clocks, CD players, and tape recorders, however, will not work well, even with transformers.
Air Connections -- Vienna International Airport is located to the southeast of Vienna. The airport handled over 254,000 arrivals and departures in 2007 and was frequented by 18.77 million passengers. Following lengthy negotiations with surrounding communities, the airport will be expanded to increase its capacity by adding a third runway. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion, including a new terminal building and office park, to prepare for an expected increase in passengers.
