Vienna South Train Station -- Vienna South Train Station (Wien Südbahnhof) is Vienna's biggest railway station. It is located in Favoriten, in the south-east of Vienna city. The international railroad traffic to Southern and Eastern Europe (including Krakow and Bratislava) is carried out mostly via the Vienna Southern Train Station.
The Sud train station is divided into 3 levels. The platforms for the Südbahn (Austrian Southern Railway) to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia are located on the highest level. The platforms for the Ostbahn (Austrian Eastern Railway) to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Germany via Czechia are situated on the middle level. The train ticket box offices are located at the lowest level. There are plans to convert the rail station into an even larger enterprise, linking it with the nearby U-Bahn stop Sudtirolerplatz.
From the Vienna South / East Train Station you can use a taxi or public transport to continue to your destination in Vienna Austria. You have access to the Schnellbahn and the tramway D to the city centre. If you use the exit Südtiroler Platz (the exit is in the opposite direction to the ticket offices at the outermost end of the platforms for the Südbahn) and proceed across the coach terminal there, you have also access to the underground line U1. All trains of the Südbahn will also stop at Wien Meidling, where you have access to the underground line U6.
Vienna is conveniently located on the rail lines between Venice Italy, Budapest Hungary, and Prague Czech Republic, the crossroads between Eastern and Western Europe.
Vienna has several railway stations which are situated all around Vienna. The West Station (Westbahnhof) is one of the major stations where you can catch trains to Germany and Switzerland. The South Station (Sudbahnhof) is the station for trains to Italy, Slowenia, Hungary, Croatia, Poland and Slowakia. The most centrally located train station is probably Vienna Central (Wien Mitte, Landstasse) which is a hub of the suburban trains (S-Bahn) and other local trains. All stations are connected with S-bahns, U-bahns and trams.
Time zone -- GMT + 1 (GMT + 2 from last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October)
Currency -- Euro (€) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of €500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of €2, 1 and 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.
Language --German is the official language of Austria, but because the high schools teach English, it's commonly spoken throughout the country, especially in tourist regions. Certain Austrian minorities speak Slavic languages, and Hungarian is common in Burgenland.
Electricity -- Vienna operates on 220 volts AC, with the European 50-cycle circuit. That means that U.S.-made appliances will need a transformer (sometimes called a converter). Many Viennese hotels stock adapter plugs but not power transformers. Electric clocks, CD players, and tape recorders, however, will not work well, even with transformers.
Air Connections -- Vienna International Airport is located to the southeast of Vienna. The airport handled over 254,000 arrivals and departures in 2007 and was frequented by 18.77 million passengers. Following lengthy negotiations with surrounding communities, the airport will be expanded to increase its capacity by adding a third runway. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion, including a new terminal building and office park, to prepare for an expected increase in passengers.
