Porto - São Bento Railway Central Station - Portugal :

Porto Sao Bento Train Station -- The main central station is at São Bento, which is itself a notable attraction,and located in the heart of Oporto, direct and connections to Braga, Linhas do Minho and Douro.

It was completed in 1916 on the site of Sao Bento da Ava Maria monastery. In 1930 its inner walls were covered with azulejos decorated by Jorge Colaco. The big panels depict various historic events like Jao I's arrival in Porto or the conquest of Ceuta. There are other scenes showing rural festivities or various means of transport.

Porto's main train station is Estação Campanhã, which handles trains to destinations throughout Portugal as well as international trains. Frequent trains run between the Campanhã and Sao Bento Train Stations.

Time zone -- GMT (GMT + 1 from last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October)

Currency -- Portugal uses the euro. Euro banknotes are issued in the following values: €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10 €5, while the Euro is divided into 100 cents, with €2, €1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c coins all available.

Air Connections -- Porto is served by Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (IATA: OPO) which is located some 15km to the north-west of the city centre. The airport is a state-of-the-art facility, having undergone a massive program of refurbishment due to the Euro 2004 football championships being partly hosted in the city. Direct flights to a growing number of major cities in Europe and the Americas are available; from these, of special interest are low cost connections to London, Frankfurt, Liverpool, Dublin and Paris. It is currently the 3rd best airport in Europe and the 3rd best in the world in the category of under five million passengers.
