Florence Train Station -- Firenze Santa Maria Novella or Stazione di Santa Maria Novella - Firenze SMN is the main national and international train station in Florence, Italy. The Florence Train Station was built in the early 1930's, but did not follow the architecture of the time instead the station has a modern design. Located in central Florence, the station is a walkable distance away from major attractions such as the Duomo.
It is located in the northwest corner of central Florence. Many services, including two internet points, are located within the station. You can stash you luggage at the left luggage facility on the ground floor. Cost is 3 Euros for the first 12 hours and 2 Euros each additional 12 hours. The Pisa Air Terminal is also located within the terminal. You can go underground to reach the CONAD grocery store, where you can get snacks to go. The SITA bus station is just to your right if you've exited the station and orient yourself facing the Santa Maria Novella church.
High-speed, long-distance trains connect Florence Santa Maria Novella with other Italian and European cities via the the main north south line running from Milan to Rome. In general train travel is relatively inexpensive and rapid. Connections from Florence to Rome and Milan are excellent, and Rome is roughly 1 hour 40 minutes away, and Milan is 3 hours away on the high speed trains.
The station itself has many bars and cafes, where you will be able to find the most expensive bottles of soft drinks in Florence. There is an underground shopping gallery in the complex under the station which has a good selection of budget clothes and shoe shops, internet cafes, music and book shops and even a hairdresser.
