Antwerp - Main Railway Station Antwerpen :

Antwerp Central Train Station -- One of the grandest buildings in Antwerp is the 'Central Station'. It welcomes visitors who arrive by train in Antwerp like a modern day cathedral. The part of the station where the platforms are is covered by an immense metal and glass dome (typical for turn-of-the-century railway stations in Europe), designed by architect Van Bogaert. The station building itself was designed between 1895 and 1905 by architect Delacenserie. Here ends the oldest railway line in Belgium (between Brussels and Antwerp over the city of Mechelen).

The entrance hall looks like a Taj Mahal built out of love for the industrial blessings of the new era. The inner decoration in eclectic style with the use of marble and the presence of a gigantic staircase make any visitor who enters Antwerp here feel like a king.

A few years ago, the Antwerp Railway Station was used in the British television series 'Hercule Poirot'. The famous 'Belgian' detective  visited Brussels... and many Belgians were surprised to see that the Antwerp station had changed its name to 'Gare de Bruxelles' (Brussels Station).

Antwerp Central Station is near the diamond district and the zoo. The city center (Grote Markt - Town Hall w/Brabo Fountain) is walking distance.

Time zone -- GMT + 1 (GMT + 2 from last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October)

Currency -- Euro

Language -- The local language in Antwerp is Dutch (Flemish). Many residents of Antwerp are fluent in English, and almost all speak at least some. Stores, restaurants, and hotels usually have at least one or two employees who are fluent in English. Although many residents can also speak French (the city gets many French-speaking visitors from elsewhere in Belgium and from across the nearby border in France), being proud Flemings they generally prefer that English-speaking visitors speak to them in English, instead of trying out their French on them, be it ever so fluent.

Electricity -- 220V, 50Hz

Connections : Antwerp has its own airport, Deurne Airport, 7km (4 1/2 miles) east of the city, but other than a few scheduled flights from London, Manchester, and Liverpool in England, not much in the way of international flights arrives at Deurne, so in a way -- for now, at any rate -- it's more useful to think of Brussels National as Antwerp's airport. If you do fly into Deurne, De Lijn bus no. 16 shuttles between the airport and Pelikaanstraat, outside Centraal Station in Antwerp center. Taxi fare to the center is around 12€ ($15)..

Public Transportation -- Bus-- Most long-distance buses arrive and depart from the bus station on Franklin Rooseveltplaats, a short distance northwest of Centraal Station. Timetables and fare information are available from a kiosk in Centraal Station.

Train--The city is called Antwerp in English (and Anvers in French), but look out for its Flemish name, ANTWERPEN, on the name boards at Centraal Station, the city's cathedral-like main rail station

Going by car, major highways connecting to Antwerp's R1 Ring Expressway are A1/E19 from Brussels via Mechelen, and from Amsterdam; A12 from Brussels via Laeken; A14/E17 from Ghent; and N49 from Knokke, Bruges, and Zeebrugge, bypassing Ghent. By the fastest direct routes, Antwerp is 51km (32 miles) north of Brussels on A1/E19; 45km (28 miles) northeast of Ghent on A14/E17; and 102km (63 miles) east of Bruges on A10/E40 and A14/E17.
