Stadio Olympico Football Stadium - A.S. Roma - S.S. Lazio Roma - Rome Italy

Stadio Olympico Football Stadium -- The Olympic Stadium (Stadio Olimpico) was built in 1937 and then re-built again in the 1953 and in the 1960 for the Olympics. The actual roof was added before the 1990 World Cup Finals. Both Lazio and Roma play their home matches here.

The stadium was designed by the architect Annibale Vitellozzi. It flaunts on a flat piece of land between the Tiber river and the Monte Mario hill. It looks like a big uncovered bowl that delicately sinks in the ground in order not to disturb its beautiful surroundings with its immense size.

The Olympic Stadium of Rome is characterized by a continuous ring of tiers. They gently follow the course of the athletics track and discretely rise over 13 meters (43 feet) only. The pillars that support the roof structure articulate the oval framework of the tiers.

During the 1990 World Cup the stadium was greatly transformed. A roof was added and most of the stands were reconstructed, however, retaining the original idea to create a unique bowl in an elliptical shape.

Directions -- # Car:
From Milano, Firenze or Bologna (Autostrada A1)
:
Take the exit that goes into the G.R.A. (Gran Raccordo Anulare, kind of Beltway) following the directions to Flaminia road. Then take the exit 5 (called Flaminia), and here towards the stadium (or also, Foro Italico).

# Metro/bus:
Metro line A (from Termini train station) following the directions to Ottaviano station and go down to the terminus one (the end of the line). Then take the bus line 32 Piazzale della Farnesina.

Getting to the Stadio Olimpico from the centre of Rome is fairly easy. Here's the most straightforward route: From the Metro stop Flaminio (Line A), take the tram number 2 right to the end of its route in Piazza Mancini (takes about ten minutes). When you exit the ticket barriers at Flaminio Station, take the exit to your right - it's labelled 'Tram per lo Stadio Olimpico'. There are always extra trams laid on for match days, so there's never a long wait.

When you get off the tram, head (with the crowds) across the tarmac bus stops, heading for the left corner. Keep the fountains on your left and walk up to the river. Cross the busy riverside road and right ahead you'll see the stadium. Cross the bridge, pass Mussolini's obelisk and a strange sunken football sculpture and there you are...

When leaving the stadium follow the same route (watch out for excited scooter riders after a victory). Catch the tram at the same stop where you alighted. Once again there will be plenty of trams. The Metro runs until 12:30 on a Saturday and 11:30 on a Sunday, so you've plenty of time to get home.

Air Connections : Nearest Airports are Ciampino Airport ( 20 km ) and Rome Fiumicino Airport ( 30 km ).
