St Jakob Park Football Stadium - FC Basel - Switzerland

St Jakob Park Football Stadium Basel -- After the demolition of the old Basel football stadium - affectionately known to Basel people as the "Joggeli" - in December 1998, it lasted only 26 months untill they had a new piece of jewellery: St. Jakob Park, designed by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron and awarded four stars by UEFA, was inaugurated. The duo of architects had already gained worldwide reputation before, for example with the construction of the Tate Modern in London. The positive resonance to the stadium project was certainly a factor in Herzog & de Meuron receiving commissions to design the Allianz-Arena in Munich and the new Olympic stadium in Beijing.

St. Jakob-Park is a multifunctional sport arena that can now seat 42'200 spectators and that is visited by over 850'000 people each year for sporting and cultural events. A gym, a retirement home with over 100 apartments, a shopping mall with 33 businesses, 680 indoor and just nearly 1,500 outdoor parking places, ten vip-lounges with a view on the pitch, a bistro and a sports-bar all go to make the CHF 250 million building into a centre that caters to the widest variety of needs.

Location -- Basel is the centre of north-western Switzerland, on the border with Germany and France, and located at the very core of central Europe, with a population of 165000 inhabitants (December 2006). Both its historic townscape and modern architecture are part of Basel’s living present.
