Fratton Park Football Stadium -- The stadium currently has four stands, all seated. The pitch runs from east to west. The largest and most modern stand, at the ground's eastern end, is named after the current first team sponsor (currently Ty Europe). Along either side of the pitch are the North and South stands, both of which are two-tiered. At the western end is the Milton End, by far the smallest stand, and the only one without a roof. This stand is given over to away supporters.
Fratton Park was established as a site in 1898, the concept of six local businessmen who purchased what was then agricultural land at a cost of £4,950. Portsmouth were formed some 15 years earlier and when they moved to the plot of land, it soon started to take shape. Terraces were introduced in 1905 and 20 years later the South stand was built at a cool £20,000! In 1928 the Milton End was flattened and re-terraced, given Portsmouth a total capacity of over 40,000. Further development started as the 1930s got underway, re-turfing the pitch and a whole new North Stand was built 4 years after it had been improved on the grounds of safety recommendations - upping the capacity to a mammoth 58,000. 1956 saw floodlights installed and the stadium remained largely unchanged until the 1990s with terraces being torn down to make way for seats as the stadium become an all-seater arena. Along with the seats came a new roof too for the North stand in 1997 and a totally new stand - the Fratton End - at a cost of £2.5m which seated over 3,000 spectators. Portsmouth got planning permission in 1994 to relocate and build a new stadium but an appeal against the move was successful, meaning the club would have to draw up plans to rebuild Fratton Park. Plans which have already been agreed and those plans are to rotate the pitch 90 degrees and build new stands, redevelop the surrounding area and to create leisure complexes around Fratton Park. The expected capacity should be over 30,000 with work already underway. A completion date hasn't yet been fixed.
