Port of Istanbul -- Istanbul is one of the highlights of a cruise of the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea. Many cruise ships use Istanbul as an embarkation or disembarkation point for cruises of the Greek Isles and Turkey.
Istanbul is one of the world's most exotic cities, straddling both Asia and Europe via the Bosphorous Strait, which runs through the middle. Most of the main tourist sites are on the European side (as is the port).
Location -- Cruise Ships dock right on the Bosphorus at the Karakoy Maritime Terminal (Galata) or Salipazari directly across from the Old City just short of the first bridge crossing the Bosphorus near Dolmabahce Palace. The Old City is within walking distance by heading north, crossing the bridge and then entering Old City by the Spice Market, however, taxis are the recommended way to get there.
Time zone -- GMT/UTC +2 Daylight Savings time starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in September.
Currency -- The New Turkish Lira was introduced on 1 January, 2005. The old Turkish Lira (TL) was withdrawn from circulation on 1 January, 2006. It is now only possible to exchange old Turkish Lira for New Turkish Lira at the Central Bank until 31 December, 2015. 1 YTL = 1,000,000 TL.
Language -- Turkish; English is generally spoken at major tourist sites and hotels but not necessarily otherwise.
Electricity -- 220V, 50Hz. European plug with two circular metal pins. Power surges are not uncommon. If using your own laptop, it’s a good idea to bring a surge protector from home.
Air Connections -- Istanbul has two international airports: The larger one is the Atatürk International Airport located in the Yeşilköy district on the European side, about 24 kilometres (15 mi) west from the city center. When it was first built, the airport used to be at the western edge of the metropolitan area but now lies within the city bounds.
The smaller one is the Sabiha Gökçen International Airport located in the Kurtköy district on the Asian side, close to the Istanbul Park GP Racing Circuit. It is situated approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of the Asian side and 45 kilometres (28 mi) east of the European city center.
