Rome - Vatican City - Holy See - Stato della Città del Vaticano (Santa Sede) - Italy :

Rome Vatican City -- The Vatican City is situated entirely within the city of Rome, sprawling over a hill west of the River Tiber, and separated from the rest of Rome by a wall. Vatican City comprises St Peter’s Church, St Peter’s Square, the Vatican and the Vatican Gardens.

The Vatican City is famous for its magnificent St Peter’s Basilica. Near St Peter’s stands the Vatican Palace, the Pope’s residence. Among the principal features of the Palace are the Stanze, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum, containing major works of art and valuable pictures.

Vatican City is the home of the Holy See, the body politic of the Roman Catholic Church and the jurisdiction of the Pope. Although the terms "Vatican City" and "Holy See" are often used interchangeably, the Holy See actually extends much further than the walls of the Vatican. The Holy See is the governing authority of Roman Catholic institutions everywhere, and the Vatican City is its home base. The closest analogy is to consider the Vatican City the seat of a federal government, and the Holy See as the country it oversees.

The pope has traditionally been based in Rome, where the Vatican has been a papal residence since 1377; the Vatican Palace is one of the largest in the world and contains a valuable collection of works of art.

The Vatican City State came into being through the Lateran Treaty of 1929, under which Italy recognized the sovereignty of the pope over the city of the Vatican. The 1947 Italian constitution reaffirmed the Lateran Treaty, and under its terms, Roman Catholicism became the state religion in Italy, enjoying special privileges. This remained so until, under a new 1984 Concordat (ratified in 1985), Catholicism ceased to be the state religion.

Vatican Museum: As if the Sistine Chapel wasn't enough, this museum contains nearly 5 miles of tapestries, frescoes, sculptures and jewelry from Italy's greatest artists.

St. Peter's Square (Piazza San Pietro) and St. Peter Basilica: Originally designed by the famous artist Bernini, this vast avenue is flanked by columns and leads directly to St. Peter's Basilica. The Basilica is built over the tomb of the martyred St. Peter and was designed by Michelangelo. Inside it is richly decorated featuring Michelangelo's famous sculpture Pieta and Bernini's bronze canopy located over the papal altar.

The intercontinental Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport is Italy's chief airport; it is more commonly known as "Fiumicino airport", as it is located within the territory of the nearby comune of Fiumicino, south-west of Rome. The older Rome Ciampino Airport is a joint civilian and military airport; it is more commonly referred to as "Ciampino Airport", as it is located within Roman territory near the border with the comune of Ciampino, south-east of Rome. A third airport, the Aeroporto dell'Urbe, is a small, low-traffic airport located about 6 km north of the city centre, which handles most helicopter and private flights.
