Prague New Town -- The last of Prague's towns that closed the medieval development of Prague. Founded in 1348 by Charles IV as a hygienic, wide open and fire proof district, was actually fully built-up in the 19-th century. Old and New Towns meet along the Narodni trida, Na prikope and Revolucni streets. In the east it is bordered by the Wilsonova street and in the south it reaches all the way down to Vysehrad.
Wenceslas Square - Wenceslas Square in Prague is a vibrant area of hotels, apartments, restaurants, bars, clubs and shops. Wenceslas Square (Vaclavske Namesti) is one of two main squares in the city centre (the Old Town Square is the other, 5 minutes walk away), and as such is a very popular place to stay.Visitors are drawn to the nightlife and entertainment all around, plus the international shops which make this Prague's main shopping area.
Prague Wenceslas Square offers easy walking access to all Prague's sights & attractions. From here you can reach anywhere in the city centre. The 750m long and 60m wide boulevard that makes up Wenceslas Square was laid out over 600 years ago during the reign of Charles IV. It was originally used as the main Prague horse market.
Over the years the Wenceslas square has been a regular parade ground for all kinds of organisations and political parties in Prague. From anti-communist uprisings to celebrations of national sporting achievements, this is where Czech's come to let off steam. Wenceslas Square comfortably holds up to 400,000 people! At the top of Wenceslas Square, the statue of St. Wenceslas on his horse cuts a striking figure. This is good King Wenceslas (Vaclav), murdered over a thousand years ago by his brother, and now a Czech national hero. In front of St. Wenceslas are two plaques in memory of those killed during the Communist era. One is dedicated to Jan Palach, a 20-year old student who set himself on fire in January 1969, in protest at the Soviet invasion.Behind St. Wenceslas is the monumental National Museum, and just off to the left is the Prague State Opera.
National Theatre - standing proudly on the banks of the Vltava in Prague, topped by a crown of gold and with sculptures of stallions, it is the symbol of the 19-th century Czech nationalism. It took 20 years to persuade the general public, collect the money and begin the construction, then 13 years to build it (1868 - 1881). Just days before the first performance it was destroyed by a fire and after a fast reconstructun was finally opened in 1883 with a gala performance of Smetana's opera "Libuse".
Municipal House - a masterpiece of stained glass, coloured mosaics, tiled murals and gold trimmings (1905 - 11). The building became a symbol of the aspirations of the new republic. It was here that the newly independent state of Czechoslovakia was officially signed in 1918.
Sate Opera - built in Viennese style in 1888 by architects Fellner and Helmer.
New Town Hall - dates back to the 14th century. It was from here that several Catholic councillors were pitched out from an upstairs windov in 1419.
