Paris The Louvre -- The Louvre Museum is one of the largest palaces in the world and, as a former residence of the kings of France, one of the most illustrious. It exemplifies traditional French architecture since the Renaissance, and it houses a magnificent collection of ancient and Western art. The Louvre is the largest museum in the western world.

The museum presents the main part of its treasures to visitors, in the new Richelieu wing : the Venus of Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Mona Lisa of Leonard da Vinci, and so many others.

The Louvre, with its glass pyramid, is an icon of Paris and one of the world's most-visited cultural sites. Its collections encompass all ages: from antiquity (the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory) and the Renaissance (the Mona Lisa, works by Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Titian) to 19th-century French masterpieces. The Louvre-Lens project, now underway, will see more of the vast collection out of storage and on display at a second site in north Paris.

The entrance of the museum is through the glass pyramid in the Cour Napoleon (Courtyard of Napoleon) which anyone who has read The DiVinci Code will be familiar with. Beneath the Pyramid is the Hall Napoleon, a 700 foot cavern which holds the ticket office, the excellent book store and the entranceways to all the exhibit areas. There are other bookstores in the different sections of the museum. Be sure to pick up a map at the information desk. You will need it. Guided tours are offered several times a day except Sunday and Tuesday. Expect to stand in line though the more off-season you go the shorter the line will be. You can also buy tickets at Virgin Mega Stores and Paris Railway Stations.

The first Louvre was a fortress built at the beginning of the 13th century by Philip II Augustus to defend Paris against the Normans and English. It consisted of a dungeon surrounded by towered walls. This castle, enlarged and embellished by Charles V in the 14th century, was sacrificed in the 16th century at the end of the reign of Francis I in order to make room for a new Renaissance structure of the same size. Only the west wing and part of the south wing of the projected palace were finished...
