Krakow Main Market Square -- Main Market Square in Kraków , also known as Rynek Krakowski - Kraków Market Square) is the main square of the Old Town, Kraków, Poland. It dates back to the 13th century and - it's the largest (200 by 200 meter square) medieval town square in Europe. The main landmarks of the Main Market square are the St. Mary's Basilica (Kosciól Mariacki), the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) and the St. Adalbert's Church.

The Old Town is where most visitors of Krakow will begin their tour of the city, and where many of the key landmarks are to be found. Since 1989, it has undergone a major transformation, and the place is now really getting into its stride. Cafes, restaurants and shops are flourishing, whilst the black soot that cloaked much of the city has been painstakingly removed.

The area of the Old City of Krakow is bounded by the ring of lightly-forested parkland, known as the Planty, that used to mark the Old City walls and moat. The Wawel, the long-fortified hill at the southern end of the Krakow Old City, overlooks the River Vistula, and forms an integral part of this district. The centre of the Old City (and of Krakow itself) is the Rynek Glowny (the Main Marketplace) from which all the main streets radiate.

Time zone -- Poland is in the Central European Time zone (CET), 1 hour ahead of GMT and 6 hours ahead of the eastern United States.

Currency -- The unit of currency in Poland is the Polish Zloty (Zl)*. 1 Zloty = 100 groszy. Notes are in denominations of Zl 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. The new coins are in denominations of Zl 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 groszy.

Language -- The official language of Poland is Polish. English, German and Russian are also commonly spoken, especially in larger cities.

Electricity -- Polish outlets follow the Continental norm (220v, 50hz) with two round plugs. Most appliances that run on 110v will require a transformer.

Air Connections -- John Paul II International Airport (tel. 012/639-30-00; www.lotnisko-balice.pl) is located in the suburb of Balice, about 10km (6 miles) from town. The airport is easily reachable by bus, train or taxi.
