Krakow -- Kraków is one of the most beautiful cities in central Europe and a highlight on any tour of the region. Located in the south of Poland. Krakow is known as the cultural capital of Poland through its love of music, poetry and theatre. It was the beloved city of Pope John Paul II, who spent forty years here as student, university lecturer, priest, archbishop and cardinal.

The formal perfection of its enormous central square, the Rynek Gówny, as well as the charm of the surrounding streets and Wawel Castle have always been known to Poles. The medieval market square (Rynek Glowny) and the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) are the focal points for visitors to Krakow, forming the heart of the Old Town area. It boats a medieval university, 13th century salt mines, royal castle and an historic Jewish quarter.

The cobblestoned streets, majestic churches (almost 100 historical churches!), and old world charm make Krakow an unforgetable destination.

Wieliczka Salt Mine is 15 km away and the Auschwitz - Birkenau Concentration Camp 40 km away from central Krakow.

Air Connections -- John Paul II International Airport (tel. 012/639-30-00; www.lotnisko-balice.pl) is located in the suburb of Balice, about 10km (6 miles) from town. The airport is easily reachable by bus or taxi.
