Edinburgh -- Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, its second largest city after Glasgow which is situated 45 miles (72 km) to the west.
Located in the south-east of Scotland, Edinburgh lies on the east coast of Scotland's Central Belt, along the Firth of Forth, near the North Sea and is one of the world's greatest cities. It's a small, pedestrian-friendly city.
The city with its seven hills is of course characterised by Edinburgh Castle which is Great Britain’s most visited tourist attraction. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was developed from the 11th century, originally within defensive walls, around the rock on whose peak is situated the famed Edinburgh Castle.
Some famous Museums are The Museum of Scotland with its Victorian Royal Museum of Scotland, the National Gallery of Scotland, the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art, Dean Gallery and The People's Story.
World famous Edinburgh Festival fills the city with drama, creativity and colourful visitors from around the world.
Edinburgh has a lot of luxury accommodations and cheap hotels, check if there are last minute rates available. The best time to travel to Edinburgh is during summer, when hours of daylight are long and warm.
Time zone -- GMT (GMT + 1 from last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October)
Currency -- The currency is the pound (GBP), which is divided into 100 pence. ATMs are available in all towns and Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted.
Language -- Other than the local language of Scottish, many locals speak English too.
Electricity -- The electrical current in Scotland is 220 volts, 50 cycles alternating current (AC); wall outlets take plugs with two round oversize prongs and plugs with three prongs. If your appliances are dual-voltage, you'll need only an adapter. Don't use 110-volt outlets marked "For shavers only" for high-wattage appliances such as blow-dryers. Most laptops operate equally well on 110 and 220 volts and so require only an adapter.
Air Connections -- Edinburgh is served by Edinburgh Airport (EDI), located about 8 miles (13 km) to the west of the city, with scheduled connections to many cities in Europe and an expanding international long-haul route network, including daily flights to New York (JFK and Newark) and summer services to Toronto.
