Zurich City Centre is easy to visit on foot. The heart of the city is called Kreis 1 or district 1, situated between the Main railway station and Lake Zurich. Most of Zurich's main sights and attractions can be found in this area.

Zurich's city center has a reputation of being a shopping paradise and an art centre. Donwtown Zürich is home to highly renowned auction houses, which made the city known throughout the world. The "Kunsthaus" (the Zurich Art Gallery) is Zurich's top address for art. It has paintings, sculptures and graphic art, mostly from the 19th & 20th centuries. The main shopping area of the city is concentrated within one square kilometre in the heart of downtown Zurich. One of the most beautiful shopping streets in Europe is the famous Bahnhofstrasse where you will find elegant boutiques, department stores, specialist shops, banks, and cafés.
Most of the major sights and landmarks of Zurich can be found around the pedestrian streets of the Zurich Old Town. The Altstadt includes winding alleyways, 16th and 17th-century houses, guildhalls and beautiful churches. The 13th-century tower of St Peter's Church has the largest clock face in Europe, while the Fraumünster Church nearby is noted for the distinctive stained-glass windows in the choir, which were created by Marc Chagall in 1970. The cities most famous landmark is the Grossmünster with its unique dual towers. Believed to be of Carolingian origin, its oldest parts date back to the late 11th century. In the Old Town, set in the wall, is one of the few Roman ruins visible in town.
In the downtown City Centre of Zurich you can find several Museums. The main museums of Zürich are the Swiss National Museum, Museum Bärengasse, Kunsthaus Zürich, Museum Rietberg, Museum Bellerive, Migros Museum and many others.
Some famous theatres are located in Zurich, the most famous theatres are Zürcher Opernhaus (the Zürich Opera’s home since 1891) and Schauspielhaus Zürich (the main theatre complex of the city). Theater am Neumarkt is one of the oldest theatres of Zürich.
Main squares located in Zurich City Centre, Switzerland
Münsterhof -- city square in the Lindenhof quarter, the historical center of Zurich, Switzerland. Münsterhof square is located in front of the Fraumünster church and is surrounded by medieval buildings, among them the guild houses "zur Waag", the former "Kämbel" guild house and, as of today, the art museum Zunfthaus zur Meisen.
Paradeplatz -- square at the Bahnhofstrasse in downtown Zurich and location of the headquarters of both UBS and Credit Suisse. The luxury 5 star Savoy Baur en Ville is set in the heart of Zurich on Paradeplatz
Bahnhofplatz -- located south of the main train station. In the middle of the square stands the Alfred Escher monument. Several hotels are located around the square and train station.
Weinplatz -- oldest city square in Zürich, named after its landmark 1909 fountain. Weinplatz was used as a corn exchange, and has a scenic view of the Rathausbrücke and the Rathaus. The great value Hotel Storchen is located right on the plaza.
Central -- Central square located at the northern border between Rathaus and Hochschulen quarters. It's a major tram junction and formerly called Leonhardsplatz. It was renamed after the Hotel Central Plaza built in 1883. The Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich's most popular shopping street, numerous banks, several museums and art galleries are only few steps away from the Central Plaza hotel.
Bellevue -- square at the southern border between Rathaus and Hochschulen quarters. It is situated at the lakeside, just north of Sechseläutenplatz and named for the Grandhotel Bellevue built in 1856.
Sechseläutenplatz -- takes its name from the Sechseläuten, a traditional Zurich festival that is celebrated there every spring. The Böög, which is a symbolic effigy of winter is burned to banish the winter. Other large events such as the annual performances by the Knie National Circus are also held here.
Pfauenplatz -- location of the Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Bürkliplatz -- square and tram stop situated at the southern end of the Bahnhofstrasse, and west of the Bellevue square, with which it is connected by the Quaibrücke.
