Central Stockholm - Old Town (Gamla Stan) - Sweden :

Stockholm Old Town -- The Old Town (Gamla Stan) is the heartbeat of the city, with its delightful narrow lanes, interesting shops and some good eateries. Close by is the stunning 608-room Royal Palace, the biggest in the world that is still used by a reigning head of state.

The Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is the most famous area in Stockholm. The Old Town is located on a small island with a 500 metre diameter, this atmospheric network of narrow medieval streets is the heart of Stockholm and today it consists of little souvenir shops, cafés and restaurants.

It is a lovely area to explore on foot and by walking along the two main shopping streets, Österlånggatan and Västerlånggatan, you will be following the route of the old medieval city wall. The old iron market connects the two streets. Although the area is relatively small, it is easy to spend the best part of a day exploring, shopping and enjoying some of the eateries.

The old Bank of Sweden on the square is where the world’s first banknotes were printed. Gamla Stan is linked to a couple of smaller islands – Riddarholmen, with its 13th century church, to the west; and Helgeandsholmen, with the parliament building, to the north.

The Royal Palace, located on the island of Riddarholmen in the heart of Stockholm, is the biggest palace in the world, with 608 rooms, that is still used by a reigning monarch. The palace was built between 1697 and 1754 on the site of a 13th century castle that was destroyed by fire, and the remains of the castle can be seen in the Tre Konor Palace Museum in the cellars.

The other main attractions in the palace are the Royal Apartments, Apartments of the Orders of Chivalry, The Treasury, Hall of State, Armoury and the Museum of Antiquities of Gustav III. The Royal Apartments are the most stunning sight here, with an impressive blend of styles, from Baroque to Gustavian neo-classic and Rococo.

The Changing of the Guards is on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12:15 and at 13:15 on Sundays and public holidays, and it is worth timing your visit to see. .
