Rome Via Veneto -- The Via Veneto district is full of grand hotels, restaurants and designer shops, it's a shopper's paradise. It is also a beautiful and elegant street and a favorite haunt of movie-stars and other celebrities. Shopping on Via Veneto can be summed up in three words: leather, jewelry and fashion. These shops are interspersed with many of Rome's best hotels and coffee bars.
Via Veneto - "twinned" with Fifth Avenue in New York, is the symbol of the Dolce Vita of the 50s and 60s in Rome. The elegant street, celebrated by Federico Fellini, was the hang out of politicians, intellectuals, entertainers and journalists, often immortalised by the ever-present paparazzi. Renowned the world over are its luxurious hotels and its famous cafes. Across from the American Embassy is the Hard Rock Cafe. The entire area was created between the late 1800s and the early 1900s.
After Via del Tritone and Via Veneto were opened into Piazza Barberini, Piazza Barberini, Fontana del Tritone, the square took on its present aspect. During the 17th century, it was named after the noble Barberini family that owned a large palace here with gardens that has now become the National Gallery of Ancient Art. The Barberini were also celebrated by two fountains by Bernini commissioned by Pope Urban VIII, the Triton fountain in the middle of the square and the Bee fountain by the Via Veneto entrance; the latter bears the family's coat of arms.
At the top end of Via Veneto district you will see the monumental Aurelian Walls that have surrounded Rome for seventeen centuries. When the Aurelian Walls were built, during the last quarter of the Third Century AD, Rome's decline had already started. For the several centuries before that, Rome's protective barrier had been at the outer edges of the Empire: Spain, Syria and Northern England (where Hadrian's Wall in still today an imposing sight like the Wall of China).
In the last quarter of the 19C the Ludovisi princes took advantage of the real estate boom to carve up their huge estate into the upper middle class blocks you see today. They laid out a new boulevard, Via Veneto, with a wide curve to help the carriage horses make it up the hill from the Piazza of their neighbors, the Barberini. The last vestiges of the Ludovisi family (descended from Pope Gregory XV) are the Casino dell'Aurora among the trees high above Via Aurora, and the original Villa Ludovisi hidden behind Palazzo Margherita, the American Embassy.
