Istanbul SultanAhmet -- The Sultanahmet area district of Istanbul Turkey is a lively, albeit, touristy part of the Istanbul city. This is the true "old section" of the city, with a history stretching back well over two millennia. Some of the most well known attractions in all of Istanbul are located in and around this area, including Ayasofya, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, and Topkapi Palace. There are many restaurants and cafes here, and it is a great place to have a seat on one of the many benches along the sprawling central square and do some people watching.
You will stay close to the main monuments and sights of Istanbul : Blue Mosque, Haghia Sophia museum, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar... etc. This area is by far the most original and hotels here are usually in Boutique-style and very charming.
The area district of Sultanahmet (named for Sultan Ahmet I, builder of the Blue Mosque) also has a lot of serviceable restaurants and many good hotels in all price ranges.
Time zone -- GMT/UTC +2 Daylight Savings time starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in September.
Currency -- The New Turkish Lira was introduced on 1 January, 2005. The old Turkish Lira (TL) was withdrawn from circulation on 1 January, 2006. It is now only possible to exchange old Turkish Lira for New Turkish Lira at the Central Bank until 31 December, 2015. 1 YTL = 1,000,000 TL.
Language -- Turkish
Electricity -- 220V, 50Hz. European plug with two circular metal pins. Power surges are not uncommon. If using your own laptop, it’s a good idea to bring a surge protector from home.
Air Connections -- Istanbul has two international airports: The larger one is the Atatürk International Airport located in the Yeşilköy district on the European side, about 24 kilometres (15 mi) west from the city center. When it was first built, the airport used to be at the western edge of the metropolitan area but now lies within the city bounds.
The smaller one is the Sabiha Gökçen International Airport located in the Kurtköy district on the Asian side, close to the Istanbul Park GP Racing Circuit. It is situated approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of the Asian side and 45 kilometres (28 mi) east of the European city center.
