Downtown - Main Squares

Helsinki City Centre can be found around the architectural heart of Helsinki, Senaatintori (Senate Square), and around the bustling seafront Kauppatori (Market Square). The market square is an excellent spot to lunch, shop for fresh fish and vegetables and buy produce from the market stalls.

The have the view of the city is from its tallest building, the Hotel Torni. You can see Helsinki's most famous landmarks and sights such as the Alvar Aalto's Finlandia Hall and Steven Holl's Kiasma, the Lutheran Cathedral, The Church in the Rock, and Uspenski Cathedral. A nice way to explore the city is by taking tram 3T, which pass among most of the main attractions.

There is quite a bit to see and do in Helsinki in summer and winter. Helsinki boasts beautiful beaches like Hietaniemi Beach, churches, a wide variety of museums, and fantastic pieces of architecture. Join one of the city's great tours that can take you around, and if you prefer to have a guide along. That way as you go around the city admiring the sights you’ll learn a lot of information from the guide. During winter there are tremendous winter sports available just on the outskirts of Helsinki. Excellent ski and other winter sport facilities are to be found at the Serena Ski complex just over 20 kms outside the city.

Try to visit out also Suomenlinna fortress and Museum, and the islands of Seurasaari, Pihlajasaari and Korkeasaari, known for the Helsinki Zoo.

Main Squares located in Helsinki City Centre, Finland

Senaatintori or Senate Square -- central Helsinki city square and site of Helsinki Cathedral. The plaza is one of the main tourist attractions of the city and is bordered by Unioninkatu or Union Street, Snellmaninkatu and Aleksanterinkatu street. In the centre of the Square stands a statue of Tsar Alexander II (1894).

Kauppatori or Market Square -- square by the South Harbour bordering the Baltic Sea where you can buy everything from vegetables to souvenirs. It's Helsinki's most international and famous market. Located beside the Market Squre is Wanha Kauppahalli or the Old Market Hall, opened in 1889 and home to thirty specialist shops. Ferries to Suomenlinna and sightseeing trips depart from Kauppatori. Held in early October is the traditional Baltic Herring Festival. Several hotels can be found nearby such as very popular Scandic Grand Marina, a waterfront hotel 500 metres from Uspenski Cathedral, the Presidential Palace and Helsinki city centre. Erottaja -- official geographic "zero point" of Helsinki, and the meeting point of central Helsinki's two famous streets, Esplanadi and Mannerheimintie.

Hakaniemi Square -- home of a large, popular and lively marketplace in the vibrant Hakaniemi district, a 5-minute metro ride from central Helsinki.
