World Heritage Site - Castle Hill District Várhegy

Budapest Castle Hill District or known as Várhegy or The Var in Hungarian is one of the oldest parts of Budapest in Hungary. The district is famous for its old, medieval, Baroque, and 19th-century houses, churches, and public buildings. The whole area is protected as an ancient monument. Budapest’s Castle District offers great historic attractions, interesting museums, charming, crooked streets following the shape of the hill, little cafés and restaurants. You can enjoy also a breathtaking panorama from of the Danube with the Chain Bridge and the opposite Pest side.

The Castle Hill or Várhegy nevertheless dominates the city, rising 48 meters above the Danube river. This hill is the place where Budapest was founded. The Buda Castle is the most prominent building on the rock.

Buda Castle - Royal Palace or Királyi palota -- part of Budapest World Heritage Site. The Royal Place today houses the Hungarian National Gallery, The National Library and The Budapest History Museum. You can reach the Royal Palace by taking the Funicular from Chain Bridge, on foot, or by taking the public bus serving Castle Hill called Várbusz from Széll Kálmán tér.

The National Gallery or Nemzeti Galéria -- in the Royal Palace wings B, C and D. It houses an astounding collection of paintings.

Matthias Church or Mátyás templom -- church located at the heart of Buda's Castle District, originally built in Romanesque style in 1015. Located next to the Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church is the luxury 5 star Hilton Budapest hotel. Rooms at this five star hotel face either the Danube or the historic Buda Castle.

Fishermen’s Bastion or Halászbástya -- large white tower and terrace complex built between 1890 and 1905. It hangs over the side of Castle Hill beneath the Matyas Church.

Vienna Gate Square or Bécsi Kapu ter -- the only existing old town-gate located at the northern end of Castle Hill. In the middle ages this was the market for non-Jewish merchants. The square is dominated by the large building of the National Archives and is surrounded by some charming houses.

Mary Magdalene Tower or Mária Magdolna torony -- situated on the corner of Országház utca and Kapisztrán tér. In medieval times it was a Franciscan church used by Hungarian speakers.

Holy Trinity Square or Szentháromság tér -- centre of Budapest Castle Hill District. Located on the square are the Holy Trinity Statue, the Old Town Hall, and Matthias Church.
