Amsterdam City Centre -- This core area around the Dam and Centraal Station, and through the neighborhood known as De Wallen (The Walls), is the oldest part of the city, and includes the Red Light District. It's home to the main downtown shopping areas and attractions such as the Royal Palace, the Amsterdam Historical Museum, Madame Tussaud's, and many canal-boat piers. Note that the Red Light District is only a small part of the Center, so you won't be constantly tripping over hookers and dopeheads. There are plenty of reasons to lodge in the Center, right in the heart of things, and a few reasons not to: It's busy, filled with traffic, noise, and social whirl. If you seek tranquility, the Center's not the place to find it.
Amsterdam is a wonderfully walkable city with most major sites located in or near the city center. Public transportation is excellent and driving is strongly discouraged within the canal ring. Of course biking is the preferred Dutch way to travel and some would say the only way to truly experience the city.

Public Transportation -- Public transport in Amsterdam mainly consists of bus and tram lines, operated by Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf, Connexxion and Arriva; however, there are four metro lines; with a fifth line, the North/South line, under construction. Three free ferries carry pedestrians and cyclists across the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord, and two fare charging ferries go east and west along the harbour.
