Porto - Portugal :

Porto -- 314km (195 miles) N of Lisbon, 304km (189 miles) S of La Coruña, Spain, 589km (365 miles) W of Madrid, Spain

Porto (known also as the Port) gave its name not only to port wine but also to Portugal and its language. The name derives from the Roman settlement of Portus Cale. The Douro, which comes from Rio do Ouro (River of Gold), has always been Porto's lifeblood. Many visitors write off Porto as an industrial city with some spectacular bridges, but there's much to enjoy here. As the provincial capital and university seat, Porto has its own artistic treasures. The city beats with a sense of industriousness -- it's not surprising that Henry the Navigator was born here in the late 14th century.

Time zone -- GMT (GMT + 1 from last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October)

Currency -- Portugal uses the euro. Euro banknotes are issued in the following values: €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10 €5, while the Euro is divided into 100 cents, with €2, €1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c coins all available.

Language -- You will find that many people in Lisbon speak English, but be prepared to use your phrase book should you wander outside the city limits. Portuguese is the official language of Portugal. French is Portugal’s third language, while Spanish is also widely understood.

Electricity -- 220V, 50Hz

Air Connections -- Porto is served by Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (IATA: OPO) which is located some 15km to the north-west of the city centre. The airport is a state-of-the-art facility, having undergone a massive program of refurbishment due to the Euro 2004 football championships being partly hosted in the city. Direct flights to a growing number of major cities in Europe and the Americas are available; from these, of special interest are low cost connections to London, Frankfurt, Liverpool, Dublin and Paris. It is currently the 3rd best airport in Europe and the 3rd best in the world in the category of under five million passengers.
