Dubai -- Dubai is a fantasy futuristic city set down in a traditional Muslim stronghold, where everything is bigger, flashier, and more wow than you'll find anyplace else. It's become one of the world's hottest tourist destinations, and a mega-hub for travel to points west, east, north, and south -- some 90 airlines provide direct air links to more than 130 cities worldwide. It's a shopping haven -- everything is duty-free.
Dubai is both a city and one of the United Arab Emirates' seven emirates (Dubai is the second-largest). It has remade itself from a modest port town, where pearl diving was once the main industry, into a bustling business center and luxury beach resort. The imagination of the shiekdom's developers seemingly knows no bounds: In the mix are giant palm-shaped artificial islands, an indoor ski run, a hotel built in the shape of a sailboat, the world's first "seven-star" resort, and thousands of laborers imported to maintain the furious building pace.
It's a sophisticated place, with cutting-edge architecture and international cuisine, but many of its enduring customs reflect the beliefs of the largely Muslim population (particularly during the holiest of the Muslim holidays, the month-long Ramadan, when visitors are asked not to eat, drink, or smoke in public places). This means that alcohol is sold mainly in hotel bars and restaurants, and dressing modestly (by Western standards) in public is recommended. Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken.
Time zone -- The local time in Dubai is GMT + 4 hours. The time does not change in the summer.
Currency --The currency is the UAE dirham (dh); $1 equals about 3.50 dh, but this fluctuates so check before you depart. Dollars are generally not accepted. Taxis take currency only (no credit cards), so exchange money at the airport or find an ATM.
Language -- The official language of the UAE is Arabic according to the constitution of the country, while English is widely spoken especially in business and trade fields. Expatriates use their mother tongues but not at official level.
Electricity -- The electricity is 220/230 volts A/C and most sockets are three-pin square. Although adaptors are usually available in hotels, you may want to purchase one before you arrive.
Air Connections -- Dubai International Airport is an international airport serving Dubai, the largest city of the United Arab Emirates. It is a major aviation hub in the Middle East, and is the main airport in Dubai.
The airport is a hub to Dubai's international airline, Emirates, as well as serving as a secondary hub for the Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways. Other smaller passenger and cargo airlines use the airport as a hub and these include Dolphin Air and Falcon Express Cargo Airlines. Airlines with secondary hubs at the airport include British Gulf International Airlines, Iran Aseman Airlines, DAS Air Cargo, Aero Asia, Air Blue, Iran Air and African Express Airways. The airport operates flights from Dubai to North America, Europe, South America, East Asia, Southwest Asia, North Asia, Australasia, and Africa. Dubai International Airport will be complemented by Dubai World Central International Airport, a new 140 kmē airport that will help handle the influx of travelers well into the future.
The airport is located 4km (2.5 miles) southeast of Dubai.
